I went on through school and graduated from Louisiana Tech with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1969. When I got my first check from my first job, I bought my first colt. Since that day, I cannot imagine life without horses. I taught school for seven years, riding horses every spare minute. While still teaching, I went to horseshoeing school and graduated in 1975. Within a year, I resigned from teaching and was shoeing full time. As I continued shoeing and riding, I began barrel racing and served as barrel racing director of Louisiana Rodeo Cowboys Association 1988-1992. Still being a horseshoer by trade, I became certified as a journeyman by the American Farrier's Association, and I served as president of the Southern Farrier's Association 1998-2002. My riding began to change as a strong desire began to emerge from somewhere deep within me to learn better communication skills with the horse. I stayed involved with rodeo as barrel racing director for Louisiana Christian Rodeo Productions since 2002 and became a board member in 2006. As my hunger for true horsemanship intensified, I began listening more and more to the best teacher…the horse. I began starting colts on the ground (preparing them for the first ride) in 1999. Mostly I work with two-year-olds but also some older horses with issues. I rode in the Extreme Cowboy Race in the summer of 2005, and the winter of 2006, finishing in the top eight both times. As my search for horsemanship continued (I do not think this search ever really ends), I discovered Dennis Reis and Universal Horsemanship. I have been using this system for about a year, and it has made a tremendous difference in teaching me to speak impeccably to the equine world. As an instructor in this system, I plan to continue learning with a passion and share the wealth of Universal Horsemanship through clinics and lessons. |
